On Oct, 19., 20 members traveled to Portugal for a 7 day Douro River cruise followed by a 3 day Azores Island stay.
We arrived on Sunday in Porto and boarded the “Riviera Duoro Splendour”. Not departing until Monday, we walked around the beautiful town then settled in and checked out the boat’s amenities.
MON: On the way up the river to tour the Mateus Palace and gardens we passed through the Carrapatelo lock, the highest lock in Europe and 1 of 5 along the river.
TUES: We went to “Castelo Rodrigo”, a unique 12th century castle and walled village high in the hills near Spain then sampled some their local wine.
WED: We arrived in Spain and visited Salamanca, where we toured with a guide and on our own. For lunch we ate at the Casino, which included a traditional flamenco show.
THURS: We arrived in Peso da Regua, the oldest wine region in Portugal. We ascended to the winery at Quinta de S. Luiz, in the hills high above the Douro River and walked among the vines before tasting their famous wines.
FRI: We arrived in Lamego and visited the sanctuary of “Our Lady of Remedies,” where we descended the 686 steps, adorned with mosaic blue and white tiles, to the town below and a stop for a tasting of sparkling wine.
SAT: Back at Porto, we toured the Calem Winery to try their port, then spent the day in the city.
SUN: Our adventure took us to San Miguel Island, the largest of the nine Islands in the Azores.
MON: Today we ascended the mountain to view the “Furnas” area, then to the lake and volcanic hot springs where meats, sausages, and vegetables were placed in pots and cooked for hours in volcanic steam. We got to taste this “Caldeira Stew” along with wines from the region. Lunch was followed by a trip to the Botanical Gardens.
TUES: We were taken to the hot springs natural pool to soak before standing under a natural waterfall surrounded by tropical forest. Upon our return we had an opportunity to swim in the ocean in front of our hotel.
WED: We departed San Miguel for Lisbon, Portugal, where we had a bus tour of the Capital city. Our trip culminated with a traditional Portuguese dinner with wine and a “Fado” show.
In September, 2023 the Warren Ski Club completed the trip of a lifetime to the amazing Amalfi coast of Italy. This eleven-day adventure was designed by our 2022/23 trip director, Mary Kirilla, with the professionals at Perillo Tours to meet the varied interests of an active Ski Club group. We toured multiple atiquities and two countries by bus, Jeep and boat. We swam in beautiful hotel pools and in the Mediterranean Sea, climbed two volcanos, rode a chairlift to the top of the Isle of Capri, ate fabulous meals, and shared great wine. The following photos capture just some of the fun and excitement of a fabulous trip.
